2. Process States & Transitions:
A process moves through five key states during its lifecycle:

  • New: The process is being created and admitted to the system.
  • Ready: The process is loaded in RAM and waiting in a queue for the CPU to become available.
  • Running: The CPU is actively executing the instructions of this process.
  • Waiting (Blocked): The process is paused because it needs an event to occur (like user input or file loading). Once the event completes, it returns to the Ready state.
  • Terminated: The process has finished execution, and its memory is freed.

3. Process Control Block (PCB):
The OS uses a data structure called the PCB to keep track of every process. It contains:
- Process State (Ready, Running, etc.)
- Program Counter (Address of the next instruction to execute)

4. Context Switching:

A Thread is the smallest sequence of programmed instructions managed independently by the scheduler, often called a "lightweight process."

A Word Processor application is a single process. It uses Thread 1 to listen to your keyboard input, Thread 2 to run a spell-checker in the background, and Thread 3 to automatically save the document. Because they share memory, Thread 2 can seamlessly read the text that Thread 1 types.

2. Benefits of Threads:

  • Responsiveness: If one thread gets blocked (e.g., waiting for a file download), other threads continue running, keeping the application responsive.
  • Resource Sharing: Threads naturally share memory and resources, eliminating the need for complex inter-process communication techniques.
  • Economy: Creating a new thread is significantly faster and uses far less memory than generating an entirely new process.

3. Types of Threads:

  • User-Level Threads: Managed entirely by a library in the user space without OS Kernel involvement. They are extremely fast to create, but if one thread makes a blocking system call, the OS blocks the entire process.
  • Kernel-Level Threads: Managed directly by the OS Kernel. They are slightly slower to create, but much more robust because the OS can schedule another thread if one gets blocked.
Unit 1: Types of Schedulers

Answer:

A Scheduler is a core OS component responsible for selecting the next job to admit into the system or the next process to run on the CPU. There are three main types:

  • 1. Long-Term Scheduler (Job Scheduler):
    It decides which programs from the hard disk are admitted into the RAM's Ready Queue to become active processes. Its primary objective is to regulate the Degree of Multiprogramming (how many processes are in memory) to prevent system overload. It runs infrequently.
  • 2. Short-Term Scheduler (CPU Scheduler):
    It selects one process from the Ready Queue and physically dispatches it to the CPU for execution. Because the CPU switches between tasks constantly, this scheduler executes extremely frequently (every few milliseconds) and must be highly optimized and fast.
  • 3. Medium-Term Scheduler:
    If the RAM becomes completely full, this scheduler temporarily removes a paused or low-priority process from memory and saves it back to the hard disk—a process known as Swapping Out. Later, when memory frees up, it brings the process back into RAM (Swapping In) to resume execution.
Unit 1: CPU Scheduling Algorithms

Answer: CPU scheduling algorithms are the rules the Short-Term Scheduler uses to decide which process in the ready queue gets the CPU next.

1. FCFS (First Come First Serve):
The simplest algorithm. The process that arrives in the queue first gets the CPU first. It is strictly Non-Preemptive.
Example: A queue at a fast-food counter. The first person gets served completely before the next person is addressed.
Disadvantage: The "Convoy Effect". If the first person orders 100 burgers, the people behind them buying just 1 drink are forced to wait a very long time, ruining average wait times.

2. SJN (Shortest Job Next):
The CPU is assigned to the process that requires the smallest amount of execution time next.
Example: The "Express Lane" at a supermarket (10 Items or Less). People with small jobs are pushed to the front, which mathematically guarantees the lowest average waiting time for the whole system.
Disadvantage: "Starvation". If short jobs keep arriving constantly, a long job stuck at the back will wait forever.

3. Round Robin (RR):
Designed specifically for time-sharing systems. Each process is given a strict, fixed time interval called a Time Quantum (e.g., 5 milliseconds). If the process doesn't finish within that limit, it is forcibly paused (preempted) and moved to the back of the line so the next process gets a turn.
Example: A teacher helping students. The teacher gives exactly 5 minutes of help to Student A, then moves to Student B, then Student C, and then loops back to Student A for another 5 minutes.
Advantage: Highly fair and responsive; no single heavy process can hoard the CPU.

4. Priority Based Scheduling:
Every process is assigned a priority integer. The CPU is always given to the highest priority process. It can be Preemptive (interrupts current running process immediately if a higher priority task arrives) or Non-Preemptive (waits for current process to finish).
Solution to Starvation: The OS uses "Aging"—gradually increasing the priority of a low-priority process the longer it waits, ensuring it eventually gets executed.

Unit 2: Deadlocks: Definition, Prevention, Avoidance, Detection

Answer:

1. Deadlock Definition:
A Deadlock is a critical system state where a set of processes are permanently blocked. This happens because each process in the set is currently holding at least one resource and is waiting to acquire another resource that is currently locked by another blocked process in the same set.

2. Deadlock Prevention:
This strategy ensures that a deadlock can never occur by altering the system rules so that at least one of the four necessary deadlock conditions (Mutual Exclusion, Hold & Wait, No Preemption, Circular Wait) is mathematically impossible.
Example: Forcing a process to request and lock all its required resources at startup before it executes prevents the "Hold & Wait" condition.

3. Deadlock Avoidance:
The OS requires advance information about the maximum resources a process will ever request. Before allocating any resource, the OS dynamically uses algorithms (like the Banker's Algorithm) to simulate the allocation and calculate the future state. It refuses to allocate resources if it might lead to an "unsafe" state where a deadlock could occur.

4. Deadlock Detection:
The system allows deadlocks to form without restriction. Periodically, the OS runs a detection algorithm to look for circular dependencies in resource allocations. If a deadlock is found, the system recovers by either forcibly preempting (stealing) resources from processes or aborting (killing) processes to break the cycle.

Unit 2: Physical Memory, Virtual Memory, Memory Allocation

1. Physical Memory and Virtual Memory:

  • Physical Memory: This refers to the actual, physical RAM hardware installed in the computer system. It is extremely fast for the CPU to access but is limited in capacity.

Answer:

Fragmentation is a memory management issue where free memory space is broken into unusable pieces and wasted, preventing new processes from being loaded into the RAM.

  • Internal Fragmentation: Occurs in memory management systems where memory is divided into fixed-size blocks (partitions). If a process requires less memory than its assigned block (e.g., assigning a 20KB memory block to a 14KB process), the leftover 6KB inside that block is completely wasted. It is trapped and cannot be given to any other process.
  • External Fragmentation: Occurs when there is enough total free memory scattered throughout the RAM to satisfy a new program's request, but that memory is broken into tiny non-contiguous holes. Because contiguous allocation requires connected space, the OS cannot load the program, completely wasting the scattered free space.
Unit 2: Virtual Memory Using Paging, Virtual Memory Using Segmentation

1. Virtual Memory Using Paging:
Paging is a non-contiguous memory management scheme that brilliantly solves the problem of External Fragmentation.

  • Frames: The OS divides the physical RAM into fixed-size hardware blocks called Frames.

  • Execution: When a program runs, its Pages can be loaded into any freely available Frames in the RAM. They do not need to be placed next to each other.

2. Virtual Memory Using Segmentation:
While Paging cuts up a program blindly into fixed mathematical sizes, Segmentation divides a program into logically meaningful, variable-sized blocks based on the program's actual structure (like the main function, local arrays, and stack).

  • Segments: The program is divided into logical units called Segments. Each segment has a different size based on its content.
  • Allocation: Each individual segment is loaded into a contiguous block of memory in the RAM, but different segments of the same program can be placed independently from one another.
  • Segment Table: The OS uses a Segment Table containing the Base Address (exact starting physical address in RAM) and the Limit (length of the segment) to track memory and prevent the CPU from reading past its boundary. It eliminates Internal Fragmentation but can eventually suffer from External Fragmentation.

This strategy ensures that a deadlock can never occur by altering the system rules so that at least one of the four necessary deadlock conditions (Mutual Exclusion, Hold & Wait, No Preemption, Circular Wait) is mathematically impossible.

3. Deadlock Avoidance:
The OS requires advance information about the maximum resources a process will ever request. Before allocating any resource, the OS dynamically uses algorithms (like the Banker's Algorithm) to simulate the allocation and calculate the future state. It refuses to allocate resources if it might lead to an "unsafe" state where a deadlock could occur.

4. Deadlock Detection:
